La PETENERA – THE SEPHARDIC CONNECTION
The Story of the Spanish Jews in Dance, Music and Song
October 16, 2008 at 7:30 PM - The Arts Council of Princeton and Alborada Spanish Dance Theatre present Alborada’s critically acclaimed “La Petenera: The Sephardic Connection” at the Princeton Regional Schools Performing Arts Center (Trego Biancosino Auditiorium) on October 16, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. The Sephardic Connection, described by the Star Ledger’s Robert Johnson (2006) as having “great excitement” and featured in May 2008 on NJN Public Television’s program Images/Imagenes, recreates the interaction of Spanish and Sephardic Jewish cultural traditions that existed in Spain in the 15th century when Sephardic Jewish, Christian and Moorish populations co-existed, by telling the story of a Sephardic Jewish family living in Cordoba, Spain in 1492, and their subsequent exodus to a Sephardic settlement in Turkey. This compelling and visually exciting production emphasizes the peaceful and productive coexistence of Jews, Christians and Muslims prior to 1492, which still has profound relevance today. Featuring the entire Alborada Company, with guest artists Daughters of Sophia Tribal Dance Troupe and Ramzi El Edlibi, who will perform dance forms in the Sephardic style. Cantorial singer Laurie Fechter sings Ladino songs – the traditional Sephardic Jewish/Spanish dialect. Guest Sephardic musicians The Noga Group bring traditional Sephardic Jewish music. Experience the powerful story of the Sephardim and see why La Gata of Flamenco Buzz (2006) said: “I’d like to see this again and again”!
